CHAPTER 3
Main Menu & Boxes
========================================================================
This reference chapter covers the main menu, the In box, the Out box,
and the Forums/Services box. It is from this main menu screen that you
will ask TAPCIS to connect to CompuServe, open message files for
reading, select headers to mark, and more.
Detailed references for many of the commands available from the main
menu are found in other chapters of this manual. The "see also" section
below notes where you can find information on menu options not found in
this chapter.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Main Screen
Main Screen.
Shows title
bar, main menu
line, In box,
Out box,
Forums/Services
box, and Status
Line.
In Box ---
The In box presents the items upon which *you* are expected to act. Each
item in the In box represents one specific task. Press [Enter] or double
click on the item to process it.
The most common item is "Msgs" (Messages to Read). Others you will see
include Headers to Mark and Library Catalogs to review. The "Msgs" item
typically lists the number of Unread messages in the forumname.MSG file
and the number of new messages (that will have the New status flag). In
parentheses you might also see the number of Pers (personal), Annc
(announcement), and Sent (file copy) messages in the file.
Once the item is "done," it disappears from the In box, even though the
information typically remains on disk. For example, once you have read
all the messages in a file, the entry for that file will disappear from
the In box. The messages themselves remain on disk in the forumname.MSG
file, which you can view using the Read | Read messages [R] command.
The Connect | New In box [N] command is the one that is used most often
to get new transactions for the In box.
Out Box ---
The Out box is a list of transactions TAPCIS will perform when it next
connects to CompuServe for an automated session. TAPCIS will act upon
every transaction unless:
* The individual Out box transaction is held (H).
* The corresponding entry in the forums/services box is held (H).
Note that deactivating the forum so it does not show in the
forums/services box will not keep the transaction from being
processed (unlike 5.x versions of TAPCIS).
3-2 Main Menu & Boxes
* Connect | Hold Out box is active (*)
* The transaction has an uncleared error (E).
* The transaction is not for Mail and the Connect | Mail only
[Ctrl+Y] command is used.
On a Connect | New In box [N] session, in addition to the items shown in
the Out box, TAPCIS will also perform actions based upon the
forums/services box entries (see description below).
Several status flags have significance in the Out box. These flags are
displayed, when present, to the left of the forum name. They are:
H Held--The transaction is held and will not be processed online
until the hold is toggled off using Action | Hold [H].
K Kept--The transaction has been "kept" using Action | Keep [K]. It
will be processed during the next automated session online, and it
will then be returned to the Out box as held (H). See Action |
Keep for more details.
I Incomplete--During the last session, this transaction was only
partly completed. To complete the transaction go online with
Connect | Out box [O]. This usually happens when the connection
fails in the middle of mailing list or marked header capture.
E Error--An error occurred when processing this transaction. You can
handle this by: 1) Pressing [Enter] on the item and seeing if
there is any information available about the error, such as would
be the case if a message was addressed improperly; 2) Pressing [H]
twice on the item to clear the error condition and going online to
try the command again; or 3) Deleting the item from the Out box
and re-entering it.
Forums/Services Box ---
The Forums/Services box shows you a list of the forums and services that
are "active." In this context, "active" means one thing--the
forum/service will be analyzed as part of a Connect | New In box [N]
session.
From the description of the Out box, you know that (with a few
exceptions) any transaction that is in the Out box will be processed
during the next automated session. But how does TAPCIS determine which
forums/services to visit and what transactions to perform when you want
to get "new" information from CompuServe?
You set up Mail, a forum, or a service using the appropriate Setup
option. You make it "active" when you save the setup, or later through
Setup | Forums/Services set [F]. Then, when the Connect | New In Box
command is used, TAPCIS will look at each of the forums/services that is
active and displayed in the forums/services box. It will add to the
"agenda" of events to process online transactions to read new messages,
scan headers, update libraries, and visit services--as you have
specified under Setup.
Main Menu & Boxes 3-3
If Mail, a forum, or a service is listed in the forums/services box,
will it always be visited as part of a Connect | New [N] session? No: if
the forum/service is held (H), it will not be visited. Also, if the
frequency for a forum/service is set to a value other than "New", it
will only be visited if this Connect | New session fulfills the
frequency requirements. For example, if you set the TAPCIS Forum to be
visited every 3 days and you last visited it on Monday, a New session
will not include the TAPCIS Forum until the first session after midnight
Wednesday.
Next to each forum/service is an indicator to tell you whether there is
an item related to that forum or service to be found in the "In" box or
the "Out" box. If the list of active forums/services will not fit on one
screen, you can scroll the list by positioning to the box using Move |
Forums/Services box [Ctrl+F] and then using the arrows or page up/down
keys.
Status Line ---
The status line at the bottom of the main screen shows the descriptive
name of the current "Setup | User" and the user ID associated with it.
In the center of the line is the descriptive name of the current
"Setup | Configuration" in square brackets []. The descriptive name of
the current Setup | Phone number is shown in parentheses (). If any of
the descriptive names is "Default", the name is not shown.
Other main menu status information includes the descriptive name of the
current Setup | Forums/Services set at the bottom of that box. The
number of items in the In and Out boxes is shown at the top of the
corresponding box.
The current TAPCIS version number and memory status are available by
using the Help | About command.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
File Menu
File Open and Exit ---
File | Open [Enter] or [Alt+F][O]
This command "opens" the currently highlighted box item. This is the
normal way to choose something you want to do from the In box (e.g.,
pressing [Enter] on the In box item "MAIL Messages to read" will open
the MAIL.MSG file for reading).
Some Out box items can be edited, while others cannot. Pressing
[Enter] on a "Send" transaction will let you re-edit the message text
before it is sent. If the item cannot be edited, you will be told
this through a dialog box.
In the forums/services box, using File | Open [Enter] is the easiest
way to edit the settings for MAIL, a forum, or a service.
3-4 Main Menu & Boxes
File | Exit [F7] or [Alt+X] or [Alt+F][X]
Exits TAPCIS. [F7] asks you to confirm whether you want to exit.
Editing an ASCII File ---
File | Edit file [Alt+F][E]
Use this command to create, edit, or view plain text (ASCII) files
such as scripts, files you want to import into outgoing messages,
AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS, *.BAT files, *.INI and *.SET files, etc.
When you're done, press [F7]. If you've made any changes, you'll be
asked to confirm whether these changes should be saved to the file,
overwriting the old contents. If you've activated an external editor
using Setup | Editor, TAPCIS will use that to edit the file.
You should not edit files, such as the USERID.CIS file, that have
lines longer than 77 characters where you do not want the lines to be
broken in the middle. (Each "address" in a USERID.CIS file must be on
a single line. Since the address plus comments can be 100+ characters
long, when you edit this file with the internal editor, the comments
or parts of the address may be automatically reformatted to the next
line, making the contents unusable. The same restriction applies to
the IN and OUT boxes).
Erasing Files ---
File | Erase file | Message [Alt+F][L][M]
File | Erase file | Catalog [Alt+F][L][C]
File | Erase file | Folder [Alt+F][L][F]
Message files, library catalogs, and folders have both the text file
(e.g., MAIL.MSG) and an index that TAPCIS creates (e.g., MAIL.~SG).
These commands let you erase both the file and the index at the same
time.
If you need to erase other files, use File | DOS Command [Sh+F1] and
enter the command as you would from DOS: DEL d:\path\filename.ext
where d:\path\filename.ext is the drive, subdirectory path, and
filename with extension of the file you wish to delete. Note that
this method does NOT confirm before the file(s) are deleted. To
delete ALL message files in a particular directory, you could use the
command: DEL d:\path\*.?SG
DOS Commands and Shell to DOS ---
File | DOS Command [Sh+F1] or [Alt+F][D]
To execute a DOS program from within TAPCIS, use File | DOS Command
and enter the name and command line options for the program. If the
program is not in the TAPCIS directory or in your DOS PATH, you will
need to enter the full drive, pathname, and filename in order for
TAPCIS to find the program.
Main Menu & Boxes 3-5
Before executing the program, TAPCIS swaps itself out of memory to
leave more room (see "Swapping Out Memory" that follows). You can
tell TAPCIS not to swap out by putting an exclamation point in front
of the program name or DOS command. For example:
!DIR *.exe
File | Shell to DOS [Ctrl+F1] or [Alt+F][H]
You may want to shell to DOS temporarily while leaving TAPCIS
running. This command will suspend TAPCIS and leave you at a DOS
prompt. When you complete the commands and programs you want to run
from DOS, you must use the command EXIT at the DOS prompt to return
to TAPCIS. You will be reminded of this by a message shown when you
shell to DOS as well as by the addition of (TAPCIS) in front of your
DOS prompt. Type EXIT then press [Enter]. Do not run TAPCIS again.
(TAPCIS) [C:\]
Shell to DOS also swaps TAPCIS out of memory in order to leave the
maximum memory available for running other programs. To shell to DOS
without swapping TAPCIS, use the [Alt+F1] key. (This option is not
available on a menu).
Swapping Out Memory ---
When TAPCIS is executed, it uses most of the available memory in the
640K region. This does not leave enough free memory to run most other
programs. To free up memory, TAPCIS moves all but around 2K to expanded
memory (EMS) if it is available, or to extended memory (XMS). If neither
EMS nor XMS is available, TAPCIS will use a disk file. The disk file
location is determined by one of the following, in the order shown:
TEMP=d:\directory environment variable (if it exists)
TMP=d:\directory environment variable (if it exists)
Current TAPCIS working directory (if there is space available)
Local drives C:, D:, E:, etc.
TAPCIS remains in suspended animation until the DOS Command ends or you
return from the Shell to DOS with EXIT. At that point, TAPCIS reloads
itself and resumes running. It may take a few seconds for TAPCIS to
reload, especially if it had to swap itself to disk.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Move Menu
The move menu options let you navigate between the main menu boxes, and
navigate within a box. The hotkeys or toolbar are the preferred ways to
specify these functions.
Transactions in the In and Out boxes appear in the same order as the
forums/services displayed under Setup | Forums/services set [F]. To
change the order, see Setup | Re-order.
3-6 Main Menu & Boxes
Move | In box [Ctrl+I] or [Alt+M][N]
Move | Out box [Ctrl+O] or [Alt+M][O]
Move | Forums/Services box [Ctrl+F] or [Alt+M][F]
Move | Between [Tab] or [Sh+Tab] or [Alt+M][B]
These commands are used to shift the focus from one box to another.
The easiest way is to use [Tab] to cycle among the three boxes. Or,
you can use one of the hotkeys.
The Select and Action menus operate on the current box. So, if you
want to Hold certain forums, you could press [Ctrl+F] to switch to
the forums/services box, select the ones you want to hold, then use
Action | Hold on them.
Move | Page | Next [PgDn] or [Alt+M][P][N]
Move | Page | Previous [PgUp] or [Alt+M][P][P]
Move | Page | First [Ctrl+PgUp] or [Alt+M][P][F]
Move | Page | Last [Ctrl+PgDn] or [Alt+M][P][L]
Scrolling by page is a quick way to move through the box when the
item you are looking for appears far up or down the list from your
current position.
Move | Item | Next [Down] or [+] or [Alt+M][I][N]
Move | Item | Previous [Up] or [-] or [Alt+M][I][P]
Move | Item | First [Home] or [1] or [Alt+M][I][F]
Move | Item | Last [End] or [9] or [Alt+M][I][L]
An item is considered a single line in one of the boxes. An In box
item lists something that has arrived for you from CompuServe. An Out
box item is a transaction TAPCIS is being asked to perform online. A
Forums/Services item is either CompuServe MAIL, a forum, or a
service. These commands let you move among the items in the current
box.
Move | Forums/Services | Next [F8] or [Ctrl+Right] or [Alt+M][S][N]
Move | Forums/Services | Prev. [Sh+F8] or [Ctrl+Left] or [Alt+M][S][P]
Move | Forums/Services | Choose [Alt+F6] or [Alt+M][S][C]
These commands let you quickly move from one forum/service to another
from within the In/Out boxes. For example, if you are in the Out box
and there are 20 MAIL messages to send, you can use [F8] or
[Ctrl+Right] to skip past those entries quickly and locate the first
item of the next forum.
The Choose command lets you quickly specify the forum/service you
need to locate, and positions to that place within the In/Out box.
Main Menu & Boxes 3-7
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Select Menu
Items are selected so that you can perform some Action such as holding,
keeping, or deleting on them. Let's say you want to hold a series of Out
box transactions. You select the ones you want to hold from the Out box
and then use Action | Hold.
If you have not selected any items, the action commands act on the
current item only.
The select flag shows as an asterisk (*) next to the selected item(s).
Select | Item [*] or [8] or [Alt+S][I]
Select the current item. The asterisk [*] or [8] hotkeys are the
easiest way to do this. [8] selects and then moves to the next item.
Select | Category [Ctrl+C] or [Alt+S][C]
Select all items in this category of this forum/service. This lets
you easily select all "Download" Out box transactions, for example,
that match the current forum/service for holding (to let you defer
those downloads for later).
Select | Forum/Service [Ctrl+S] or [Alt+S][S]
Select all items of the current forum/service. Useful for mass
holding or deleting of the transactions for a forum/service.
Select | All [Ctrl+A] or [Alt+S][A]
Select all items in the current box.
Select | Held [Ctrl+H] or [Alt+S][H]
Select all held items. You typically use this to select the held
items and use Action | Hold again to turn off the hold (H) flag.
Select | Clear [Ctrl+L] or [Alt+S][L]
If you decide not to do an Action for selected items, use Select |
Clear to clear the select flags (*).
Select | Toggle [Alt+S][G]
Select | Set on [Alt+S][O]
Select | Set off [Alt+S][F]
The normal action when you select an item is to turn the select flag
(shown as an asterisk (*) next to the item) ON if it is OFF and turn
the flag OFF if it is ON. This is called "toggling" the flag.
At times you may want to change this behavior. Set on always sets the
flag on; Set off always turns the flag off (if you find you can't
select any items, you may have accidentally chosen the set off
3-8 Main Menu & Boxes
option). These options are rarely used, but they can be useful under
certain circumstances.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Action Menu
Actions are performed on the current item in a box, or selected items if
any were previously selected (and show with an asterisk (*) in the box).
These actions change the operation and configuration of TAPCIS, so you
should be familiar with their effects before using them. If there are
selected items, you will be asked whether you want the action to apply
to the selected items or to just the current item. You can also use that
dialog to indicate whether you want certain flags such a hold and mark
toggled (default), set, or cleared.
Action | Hold [H] or [Alt+A][H]
Toggles Hold flag (H) on selected item(s). The hold flag does
different things depending upon the box in which it is used.
In box: Hold an item to keep it from disappearing from the box. For
example, Hold a "Messages to read" item and even after all the
messages are read, the item will remain in the In box. Held items
do not become part of the previous/next forum list ([Sh+F8] and
[F8]). Therefore, you will need to select a held item directly
from the In box to access it.
Out box: Hold an item to keep it from being processed online. You
will need to use Action | Hold again on the item before it will be
"released".
Forums/Services box: If you hold a forum or service, it will not be
visited online and all its Out box transactions will be held as
well (even though the items in the Out box will not show with an
(H) flag next to them).
There are rare times when CompuServe MAIL is not available online,
and CompuServe enters an infinite loop of "One moment please...".
TAPCIS detects this event and logs off after the 4th one. To be
able to use the other forums/services, you must go to the
forums/services box, highlight MAIL, and press [H]. This "holds"
MAIL and all its transactions, and TAPCIS logs in using a slightly
different method in order to avoid this CompuServe problem. Later,
you can turn Mail back on by pressing [H] again with MAIL
highlighted, and go online using Connect | Mail only [Ctrl+Y] to
get and send your mail.
Action | Keep [K] or [Alt+A][K]
Toggles Keep flag (K) on selected item(s). The keep flag does
different things depending upon the box in which is it used.
In box: Keeps the transaction in the box even if it has been
processed to completion.
Main Menu & Boxes 3-9
Out box: This is where the Keep flag is the most useful. You can keep
transactions so that they can be easily "recycled". For example,
you can specify a library search and flag it with K in the Out
box. After the online session does the search, the library search
transaction will return to the Out box with a Held (H) status. You
can use the Action | Hold [H] command on these to have them
execute online one more time, Keep to have them execute again and
return to Hold status, or Action | Delete [Del] to remove them
from the Out box.
Forums/Services box: Action | Keep has no function in this box.
Action | Delete [D] or [Del] or [Alt+A][D]
This command deletes the current or selected item(s) from a box. Its
behavior depends upon the box from which it is executed:
In box: Delete in the In box removes the transaction but does not
erase the underlying disk file. For example, if you delete a
"Messages to read" transaction, the underlying forum message file
remains on disk where it can be read using Read | Read messages
[R].
Out box: Here, the Delete command actually removes the transaction
from the Out box and any accompanying disk files. For example, if
you delete an item that sends a message, once it is deleted, it is
GONE (which is why TAPCIS asks if you are really sure before
actually deleting the transaction.) You cannot recover or unerase.
Use care when deleting from the Out box.
Forums/Services box: Delete from this box only removes Mail, forums,
or services from the active set. The disk files and settings
remain. It is a quick way of de-activating a forum or service. You
can reactivate them through Setup | Forums/Services set [F].
Action | Add [A] or [Ins] or [Alt+A][A]
In/Out boxes: Brings up the Other | Special actions [Sh+F4] list.
Forums/Services box: Brings up the Setup | Forums/Services set [F]
dialog.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Read Menu
Read | Read messages [R] or [Alt+R][R]
This is a way of opening a forum/service message file if a
transaction for reading messages is not shown in the In box. A list
of files is shown from the messages directory. Pick the one you want
to read and press [Enter].
If used from the forums/services box, TAPCIS will open the message
file for the current/selected forum(s).
3-10 Main Menu & Boxes
Read | View folders [V] or [Alt+R][V]
Folders are simply message files that do not necessarily correspond
to a particular forum or service. They can bear any valid DOS
filename, such as THINGS.2DO or JUNK.MY. TAPCIS shows you a directory
of all files in the Folders directory. Pick the one you want from the
list or specify a filename.
Each forum/service does have a default folder called forumname.SAV,
which is the forum's "Save file". This folder is stored by default in
the Folders directory rather than in the Messages directory.
Read | View old files [Alt+R][O]
"Old" files are where aged messages are stored when you choose to
copy them to an archive rather than erase them. This command lists
the *.OLD files in the "Old files" directory if one is specified, or,
if none was specified, the messages directory.
Read | View other files [Alt+R][F]
Presents you with a File Open dialog where you can specify a message
file anywhere on disk to be opened. Note this will only work with
TAPCIS-format message files.
Read | Quick read [Q] or [Alt+R][Q]
When TAPCIS detects that new messages have been added to a file, it
normally indexes those messages so that you can read them. However,
indexing takes some time. If you want to open a previously indexed
message file without indexing the new messages, use this "quick read"
option. The new messages will remain in the file and will be indexed
the next time the file is opened with one of the normal Read
commands.
You can request a quick read by using the [Q] hotkey or by pressing
[Ctrl+Enter] from the In box with a Messages to read transaction
highlighted.
Read | Mark headers [M] or [Alt+R][M]
Most of the time you will select headers to mark by pressing [Enter]
on the "Headers to mark" transaction in the In box. This Read | Mark
headers command lets you choose a forum .QSN (header file) directly
from a list of available ones.
If used from the forums/services box, TAPCIS will mark headers for
the current/selected forums(s). Note that if you do not pick an item
from the In box, and instead use this command, File | Next will not
work unless you select a set of forums before using this command.
Main Menu & Boxes 3-11
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mouse Support
Single click in any box to move the highlight to that item in the box.
Double clicking on a box item is the same as pressing [Enter]. From the
In/Out boxes, it opens the item. From the Forums/Services box, the
double click edits the setup for the item.
Toolbar ---
The toolbar is designed to let you select commonly used commands without
having to use a menu or the keyboard. You turn on the toolbar using
Setup | Parameters | Interface. Once it is active, you see (on the
bottom of the screen above the status line) the buttons described below.
The equivalent menu options are shown in parentheses:
[NewInbox] Get a new In box based on forums/services setup; also
process Out box.
(Connect | New In box [N])
[DoOutbox] Process Out box--send messages, get files/marked headers,
library searches, etc.
(Connect | Out box [O])
[Hold] Toggle Hold flag on selected items(s)
(Action | Hold [H])
[Keep] Toggle Keep flag on selected items(s)
(Action | Keep [K])
[Add] Add a special action to the Out box
(Other | Special action [Sh+F4])
[Config] Setup userid/name, modem, phone, colors, directories, and
forums as a group
(Setup | Configuration [Ctrl+G])
[Forums] Choose from list forums/services
(Setup | Forums/Services set [F])

Frequently Asked Questions
*** How do I get rid of certain items from the In box that I am not
interested in viewing, such as some automatic library updates that
result in catalogs to read?
Highlight the item you want to remove, press [Del], then press the [Yes]
button. Although the confirmation box warns that you cannot simply undo
the operation, deleting items from the In box never deletes any file
from disk. If you want to review the information, you could use [C] to
view a catalog, [R] to read a message file, or [M] to mark headers.
*** How do I send one item from the Out box without performing any of
the other actions listed?
Press [Ctrl+O] to move to the Out box, [Ctrl+A] to highlight all items,
[H] to Hold, and choose the [Selected] button from the confirmation
dialog. Then highlight, the individual item(s) you want to have
processed and press [H] to remove the hold (H) status from them.
Finally, Connect | Online [O].
*** After reading messages, the message file is no longer in the In box.
How do I get back to the file to read the messages?
Use Read | Read messages [R] and pick the corresponding file from the
list presented.
